In the city of Baie Mare, for example, many Roma have been forced into state-owned apartment houses that had been used for workers at a now-shuttered gas plant. The city built a wall around the buildings to keep the housing conditions from public view. In other cities, Roma squat in abandoned buildings or in marginally developed areas.
